Sheet Vinyl Calculator

Enter the room's length and width, the roll width and the pattern repeat if there is one, and this calculator returns the length of roll to buy, the number of seams, the material in square feet and square yards, the offcut and the cost, for whichever direction of the roll is better.

Sheet vinyl is not bought by area; it is cut from a roll of fixed width, so a room an inch wider than the roll can need twice the material and a seam. This calculator lays the roll both ways, counts the strips and seams for each, adds the trim at the walls and the pattern match between strips, and picks the layout with fewer seams and then less material.

Show the arithmetic
  1. Floor area = 15 ft × 13 ft = 195 sq ft
  2. Run along the width: strips = 15 ft ÷ 12 ft roll, rounded up = 2
  3. Each cut = 13 ft + 0.5 ft trim = 13.5 ft
  4. Roll to buy = 2 × 13.5 ft = 27 ft; × 12 ft = 324 sq ft = 36 sq yd
  5. The other direction would be 2 strips of 15.5 ft, 1 seam, 31 ft of roll
  • Place seams away from doorways and traffic lanes and parallel to the main light; they are welded or sealed with the maker's seam kit. A seam in a bathroom should never fall near the tub or toilet.
  • More than 30% of the roll is offcut. A wider roll, or a seam placed so the offcut covers a closet or hallway, can save a lot; ask the dealer to cut the job from a single roll.
  • The figure is the length to cut from the roll, with 3 in of trim at each end. Dealers cut to the inch but often charge to the next foot; check before you pay for it.

Understanding your result

The headline is the length of roll to buy, with the roll width, the direction and the seams beneath it. The stats give the material in square yards (or square metres), the seams and the offcut; the table compares the best direction with the other one, so you can see what you are choosing between.

Each strip runs the full length of the room in one direction and is as wide as the roll. The number of strips is the room’s other dimension divided by the roll width, rounded up, and the seams are one fewer. Each cut is the room length plus 3 in of trim at each end, plus one pattern repeat for every strip after the first when the pattern must match. The calculator picks the direction with fewer seams and, when the seams are equal, the one that uses less roll.

The offcut is material you pay for and do not lay. On a room just over the roll width it can be 40% of the order; the note says so when it passes 30%, because that is when a wider roll, a dealer’s remnant or a seam placed so the offcut covers a closet saves real money. The same strip arithmetic for carpet, with pile direction added, is on the carpet seam planner. For click vinyl instead of sheet goods, use the vinyl plank calculator.

How we calculate this

strips = room width across the roll ÷ roll width, rounded up seams = strips − 1 cut length = room length along the roll + 2 × 3 in trim + pattern repeat (if strips > 1) roll to buy = strips × cut length material = roll to buy × roll width; sq yd = material ÷ 9 offcut = material − floor area choose : fewer seams, then less material, of the two directions

The trim allowance of 3 in at each end is the usual amount installers want for scribing to an uneven wall. The pattern allowance of one repeat per extra strip is the worst case; with luck the match costs less. Unit conversions use exact factors (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft, 1 m = 3.2808 ft), listed on the units guide. The guide to sheet vinyl rolls and seams covers seam placement, pattern match and cutting templates, and the standard sizes reference lists roll widths by market.

The assumptions behind the numbers

Assumption Default Where it comes from
Roll widths 6, 12 and 13.2 ft; 2, 3 and 4 m Standard sheet vinyl widths (Armstrong, Mannington, Tarkett product pages, 2025)
Trim 3 in (7.5 cm) at each end of each cut Installer practice for scribing to the wall
Pattern match one repeat per strip after the first Worst case; the repeat is on the product page
Room 15 × 13 ft (4.5 × 3.9 m) Chosen so the default needs a seam on a 12 ft roll
Choice rule fewer seams first, then less material Seams are the weak point of sheet flooring

Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.

The calculator treats the room as a rectangle. An L-shaped room or a bathroom with a tub recess is usually cut from one piece using a paper template, and the roll needed is the rectangle that contains the room, which is what you should enter. It does not count the adhesive, the seam kit or the transition strips, and it does not use the offcut from one room for another; if you have two rooms, measuring them together can save a lot. The complete method for working out flooring covers measuring for any material.

Two worked examples

An 11 × 9 ft bathroom on a 12 ft roll

Random pattern, no repeat.

  • Along the length: 1 strip of 11.5 ft; along the width: 1 strip of 9.5 ft. Both have no seam
  • Best: the 12 ft roll spans the 11 ft wall, cut 9.5 ft of roll
  • Material: 9.5 × 12 = 114 sq ft = 12.7 sq yd; offcut 15 sq ft

One piece, no seam, 13% offcut, which is the whole point of sheet vinyl in a bathroom: no joints for water to find. Turning the roll the other way would buy two feet more for nothing.

A 16 × 14 ft kitchen with an 18 in pattern repeat

12 ft roll, $24 per square yard.

  • Along the width: 2 strips, each 14 + 0.5 ft trim + 1.5 ft match = 16 ft; 32 ft of roll, 1 seam
  • Along the length: 2 strips of 18 ft, 36 ft of roll, 1 seam
  • Material: 32 × 12 = 384 sq ft = 42.7 sq yd; cost $1,024; offcut 160 sq ft (42%)

Wider than the roll in both directions, so a seam is unavoidable and 42% of the purchase is offcut. A 13.2 ft roll still needs a seam here, but the offcut strip, 10 ft wide, is large enough to do a laundry room or a hallway; buying for two rooms at once is how dealers keep sheet vinyl economical.

Where to find your inputs

Room dimensions. The longest and widest points, wall to wall, into doorways to the middle of the threshold. For an irregular room, the bounding rectangle.

Roll width. On the product page or the sample’s label. Ask the dealer which widths the pattern you like is made in.

Pattern repeat. On the product page, as the distance along the roll at which the pattern repeats. Random patterns have none.

Price. Per square yard or per square foot from the dealer; the calculator takes per square yard in US units and per square metre in metric.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering by area. Sheet vinyl comes off a roll; order the length, not the square feet.
  • Forgetting the trim. Cut to the exact room size and the edges will not reach an uneven wall.
  • A seam in the doorway. It wears and lifts first. Plan where the seam falls.
  • Ignoring the pattern match. A mismatched seam on a tile-look vinyl is visible across the room.
  • Tearing up old vinyl blind. Test old sheet flooring and adhesive for asbestos first.
  • Not using the offcut. A large offcut can cover a closet, a laundry room or a hall. Measure them together.

Questions people ask

How much sheet vinyl do I need for a 12 × 10 room?
On a 12 ft roll, run the roll so its 12 ft width spans the 12 ft wall and cut a single piece 10 ft 6 in long, including 3 inches of trim at each end. That is 126 sq ft or 14 sq yd, with no seam. Running it the other way would need 12.5 ft of roll.
What widths does sheet vinyl come in?
In the US, 6 ft and 12 ft are the standard widths, and some products come 13.2 ft (4 m) wide. In metric markets, 2, 3 and 4 m. A room narrower than the roll in one direction can be done in one piece, which is the main reason to choose sheet vinyl.
Where should a seam go in sheet vinyl?
Away from doorways and traffic lanes, parallel to the main source of light, and never near a tub, toilet or dishwasher. Seams are sealed with the maker's seam kit or heat-welded. The calculator counts them; where they fall is your call.
How does pattern repeat change the amount?
Every strip after the first must start at the same point of the pattern so the seam matches, which can waste up to one full repeat per extra strip. A room needing two strips of a product with an 18 inch repeat needs 18 inches more roll than a random pattern.
Is sheet vinyl priced per square foot or per square yard?
Often per square yard in the US, by tradition. One square yard is 9 square feet, so $27 per sq yd is $3 per sq ft. The calculator shows both and prices the material you buy, offcut included, because that is what you pay for.
Can I lay sheet vinyl over old vinyl?
Often, if the old floor is a single layer, well bonded, smooth and not cushioned; the maker's instructions say which. Old vinyl and its adhesive from before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos and should not be sanded or torn up without testing; see the EPA guidance.
