Understanding your result
The headline is the labour from low to high, with the cost per square foot and the crew-days beneath it. The stats give the midpoint, the crew-days and the implied rate per person-hour; the table splits the labour into installation, prep and stairs.
Installation is the area times the labour range for the material, multiplied by the pattern factor and the region factor. Prep is priced by the level you choose, from a sound floor to new underlayment. Stairs are priced per step by material, because they are slow work and never priced by area. If the total falls below the installer’s minimum charge, the minimum is used and the note says so.
Crew-days come from the material’s typical daily output for a two-person crew, slowed by the pattern. Dividing the labour by the crew’s hours gives the implied rate per person-hour, which is the figure to compare with wages: it is meant to be well above the BLS median wage, and the note explains why. For the full budget including material and removal, use the flooring cost estimator; for the calendar time including curing, the installation time calculator; and to weigh doing it yourself, the DIY vs pro calculator.
How we calculate this
The labour ranges are the common middle of published 2025–2026 cost surveys; the daily outputs are installer rules of thumb for a two-person crew in an empty room; the wage is the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook median for flooring installers and tile and stone setters, May 2024. All are listed on the installer rates reference page. The guide to installer charges explains how quotes are built, the subfloor prep guide covers what prep involves, and the removal guide covers the tear-out that usually comes first.
The assumptions behind the numbers
| Assumption | Default | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Labour ranges by material | LVP and laminate $1.50 to $3.50; engineered $3 to $6; solid hardwood $4 to $8; tile $5 to $12; carpet $0.50 to $1.50 per sq ft | Published 2025–2026 cost surveys (HomeGuide, Angi/HomeAdvisor, Fixr, Rubi, Bob Vila) |
| Pattern | diagonal ×1.15, herringbone ×1.4 | Installer pricing practice |
| Prep | $0.50 to $4 per sq ft by level | Cost surveys for subfloor work |
| Stairs | $25 to $200 per step by finish | Cost surveys for stair installation |
| Daily output | 650 sq ft click plank, 350 nailed hardwood, 150 tile per two-person crew | Installer rules of thumb |
| Wage | $25.00 per hour median | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2024 |
| Minimum charge | $350 | Typical installer minimums of $300 to $500 |
Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.
The calculator prices labour only; material and removal are in the estimator. It does not price moving furniture, appliance disconnection, trim, or work found after the old floor is up. The ranges are US figures; in other countries, the structure holds but the numbers do not.
Two worked examples
600 sq ft of laminate on a sound floor
Average region, straight, no stairs.
- Installation: 600 × $1.50 to $3.50 = $900 to $2,100
- Crew-days: 600 ÷ 650 = 0.9
- Implied rate: $61 to $142 per person-hour
Under a day for two people. The implied hourly figure is two to five times the median wage, which is what a business with insurance, a van and tools charges; at the low end it is lean.
180 sq ft of tile on the diagonal over a leveled floor
Lower-cost region.
- Installation: 180 × $5 to $12 × 1.15 × 0.85 = $880 to $2,111
- Prep: 180 × $1.50 to $3 × 0.85 = $230 to $459
- Labour: $1,109 to $2,570, $6.16 to $14.28 per sq ft; 1.4 crew-days
The leveling adds a fifth to the labour, and the job also waits a day for the leveler to cure before tile can go down, which the installation time calculator shows.
Where to find your inputs
Area and material. From your plan.
Prep. Look at the subfloor, or ask the installer after the old floor is up; quotes often list prep separately.
Pattern. Straight, diagonal or herringbone.
Region. Rural lower-cost, average, or a high-cost metro.
Stairs and minimum. Count the steps; ask the installer for their minimum charge.
Common mistakes
- Comparing labour without the pattern. Herringbone labour is 40% more for the same area.
- Leaving out prep. It is often added after the old floor comes up.
- Expecting the wage rate. A business charges two to three times the wage.
- Small jobs at area rates. The minimum charge often sets the price.
- Pricing stairs by area. They are priced per step.
- Ignoring the region. Labour varies far more than materials between places.
Questions people ask
- How much do flooring installers charge per square foot?
- In published 2025–2026 surveys, roughly $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft for click vinyl plank and laminate, $3 to $6 for engineered wood, $4 to $8 for nailed solid hardwood, $5 to $12 for tile and $0.50 to $1.50 for carpet. High-cost metros run about a third higher.
- Why is tile labour so expensive?
- Tile is slow: a two-person crew sets roughly 100 to 200 sq ft a day including cuts, against 500 to 800 sq ft of click plank. It also needs a flat substrate, setting beds, grouting the next day and sealing.
- What does an installer earn per hour?
- The BLS reports a median wage of $25 an hour for flooring installers and tile and stone setters (May 2024). A quote's implied rate is typically two to three times that, because it also pays for insurance, vehicles, tools, travel, unbilled time and the business's profit.
- Do installers charge a minimum?
- Most do, often $300 to $500, because a small job still takes a trip, setup and clean-up. A single bathroom floor is often priced at the minimum; combining rooms into one visit lowers the cost per square foot.
- How much more does a herringbone floor cost to install?
- Expect about 30 to 50% more labour than a straight layout, because every piece is cut or fitted at an angle and the layout must be set out precisely. A diagonal layout adds about 15%.
- What counts as prep?
- Anything done to the subfloor before the floor goes down, such as patching and sanding high spots, pouring leveling compound, or adding new underlayment panels. It is often quoted separately and is the most common reason a quote goes up after the old floor comes out.
