Reference tables

The figures the calculators use, on their own pages with their sources, so you can look them up, check them or cite them.

Every default in a calculator on this site comes from one of these tables, and every table names its source and the date it was last reviewed. If a figure on your product's label or in a quote is different, use yours: the tables are a starting point and a check, not a substitute for the label.

  • Coverage per box, carton and roll

What a box, carton or roll of tile, wood, laminate, vinyl, carpet, pad, underlayment and rubber typically covers, with the products behind each figure.

  • Waste factors by material and layout

The waste percentages for straight, diagonal and herringbone layouts of every material, and the adjustments for room shape, grade, pattern and installer.

  • Grout and thinset coverage tables

Pounds of grout per 100 sq ft by tile size, thickness and joint; thinset per bag by trowel; self-leveler by depth; with the manufacturers’ figures.

  • Installation labour rates and cost ranges

Material, labour, supply and removal ranges per square foot, crew output, lifespans, BLS wages and electricity prices behind the cost calculators.

  • Flooring weights per square foot

What tile, stone, mortar, wood, laminate, vinyl, carpet and rubber weigh, box and pallet weights, and the floor loads they are compared with.

  • Standard flooring sizes

Tile, plank, roll, sheet, trim, transition, stair, door and rug sizes in US and metric units, for estimating.
