Understanding your result
The headline is the day the floor is ready, with the calendar days since delivery beneath it. The stats give the laying days and the calendar days; the table lists each step with its dates: removal, prep, leveler cure, acclimation, laying, curing or grouting, finishing, and the ready date.
Removal and prep start the day after delivery and run in sequence. Acclimation runs at the same time, from delivery; laying starts only when removal, prep, any leveler cure and the acclimation days are all done. Laying days come from the material’s daily output for the crew size, plus a little time per room for setup and transitions. Curing follows tile, stone, glued vinyl and cork; site finishing follows a wood floor sanded and finished in place. Weekends are skipped for working steps unless you tick the box; curing runs every day regardless.
For the hours behind the laying days, use the installation time calculator; for the acclimation rule in detail, the acclimation planner; for the budget to go with the schedule, the flooring cost estimator.
How we calculate this
Daily outputs are the same installer rules of thumb as the installation time calculator; acclimation days follow manufacturer and NWFA guidance; curing times are typical product data. The installer charges guide covers crew rates, the self-leveling guide covers leveler curing, and the refinishing guide covers the days site finishing takes.
The assumptions behind the numbers
| Assumption | Default | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Daily output | as in the installation time calculator | Installer rules of thumb |
| Room overhead | 0.15 day per room | A judgement for setup, furniture and transitions |
| Acclimation | hardwood 5, engineered and cork 3, laminate and LVP 2, carpet 1 day | Manufacturer instructions and NWFA guidance |
| Curing after laying | tile 2, stone 4, sheet vinyl and cork 1 day | Typical product data |
| Site finishing | 4 working days | Sanding and three coats with drying |
| Example | 800 sq ft of hardwood in 4 rooms | Chosen for the example |
Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.
The schedule assumes everything is delivered on day one, crews arrive when planned, and nothing unexpected is found under the old floors. It does not handle phased jobs where some rooms are in use while others are worked on, or holidays. Treat the ready date as the earliest, and plan on a day or two later.
Two worked examples
1,500 sq ft of vinyl plank across six rooms
Delivery Mon, Nov 2, 2026; two days of removal, one of prep, two installers, weekdays.
- Removal: Tue, Nov 3 to Wed, Nov 4; prep: Thu, Nov 5
- Acclimation: 2 days, done by Wed, Nov 4
- Laying: 1,500 ÷ 650 + 6 × 0.15 = 3.2, so 4 days, Fri, Nov 6 to Wed, Nov 11
- Floor ready: Wed, Nov 11, 2026, nine calendar days after delivery
The weekend in the middle adds two calendar days to four working days. A crew that works Saturdays finishes on Monday.
A 180 sq ft tiled kitchen with leveling
Delivery Mon, Nov 2; one day of removal, one of prep, one day of leveler cure.
- Removal Tue, Nov 3; prep Wed, Nov 4; leveler cure to Thu, Nov 5
- Laying: 2 days, Fri, Nov 6 to Mon, Nov 9
- Grout and cure: to Wed, Nov 11; floor ready Wed, Nov 11, 2026
A small kitchen takes as long as a large plank floor, because the leveler and the grout each need their day. No crew size changes that.
Where to find your inputs
Start date. The delivery date.
Area and rooms. The total area and the number of separate rooms.
Removal and prep days. From the installer, or the removal and installation time calculators.
Installers and weekends. Who is working, and whether they work Saturdays and Sundays.
Common mistakes
- No slack. Something is always found under an old floor.
- Laying before acclimation. Wood laid early moves later.
- Walking on grout or leveler too soon. Curing times are not suggestions.
- Flooring the exit first. Work toward the door.
- Furniture back on day one. Wait for glues and grout to cure.
- Forgetting site finishing. Sanding and coats add most of a week.
Questions people ask
- How long does a flooring project take from delivery?
- For 1,500 sq ft of vinyl plank across six rooms, with two days of removal and a day of prep, about nine calendar days on a weekday schedule. A small tiled kitchen with leveling is about the same, because of the curing waits.
- Can the flooring acclimate while the old floor is removed?
- Yes, if it is stored in the house at living conditions, not in the room being demolished. The schedule runs acclimation in parallel with removal and prep and starts laying when both are done.
- In what order should rooms be floored?
- Start at the far end of the house and work toward the exit, so nobody walks across a finished floor. Do the rooms that need curing time first and the ones that can be used at once last.
- How long before furniture goes back?
- Floating floors and carpet straight away; glued floors usually after a day; tile once the grout has cured, about a day for light use and longer for heavy furniture; site-finished wood after the last coat has cured, several days.
- Does working weekends shorten the job?
- The calendar time, yes, but not the curing. Many installers do not work weekends, and if you are doing it yourself, weekends may be all you have; set the option to match.
- What usually delays a flooring job?
- What is found under the old floor: rotten subfloor at a toilet, an uneven slab, an extra layer of old flooring, or old vinyl that needs testing for asbestos. Leave a day or two of slack in any schedule.
