Flooring planning calculators

Compare materials over their lifetime, run radiant heat costs, schedule acclimation and installation, order samples.

The decisions that change what you buy are made before the first box is ordered: tile or plank, carpet replaced every twelve years or hardwood refinished every twenty, radiant heat or a rug, start the job this week or wait for the wood to acclimate. This group turns those decisions into numbers with dates and dollars on them, so a cheaper floor that lasts half as long can be compared honestly with a dearer one, and a schedule can be built backwards from the day the furniture comes back.

The lifespan figures come from published ranges and are wide on purpose; a floor's life depends on the house, the dog and the sun through the window more than on the material. The acclimation and schedule planners follow manufacturer and NWFA guidance on days and moisture rather than inventing a number, and they say when a step can be shortened and when it cannot.

Questions people ask

Is tile or LVP cheaper over 20 years?
Tile usually costs twice as much installed but lasts the full 20 years and beyond; LVP is cheaper to lay but most products are replaced after 10 to 20 years. On a 400 sq ft kitchen, tile at $16 per sq ft installed is $6,400 once; LVP at $7 per sq ft replaced once in 20 years is $5,600 plus a second round of removal. The comparison calculator runs both with your prices and lifespans.
What does carpet cost per year?
A mid-range carpet installed with pad at around $5 per sq ft that lasts 10 years costs $0.50 per sq ft per year, or about $0.60 with typical upkeep; a 300 sq ft bedroom is $150 to $180 a year. Hardwood at $12 per sq ft that lasts 50 years with two refinishes at $4 per sq ft is $0.40 per sq ft per year before upkeep. The lifespan calculator does this for any floor.
How much does an electric radiant floor cost to run?
A 30 sq ft bathroom mat at 12 W per sq ft draws 360 W. Run 4 hours a day at a US average of about 18 cents per kWh (EIA, 2026) it costs roughly 26 cents a day, or about $8 a month in the heating season. A whole 150 sq ft kitchen floor at the same duty is about $39 a month.
How long should flooring acclimate before installation?
Solid hardwood is acclimated until its moisture content is within 2 to 4 percentage points of the subfloor, which in a conditioned house usually takes 3 to 7 days but can take weeks after a humid summer. Laminate and LVP generally need 48 hours in the room at normal living temperature. Tile needs none. The acclimation planner gives the earliest install date from the delivery date.
How long does it take to floor a whole house?
A two-person crew lays about 500 to 800 sq ft of click flooring a day, 300 to 500 sq ft of nailed hardwood, and 100 to 200 sq ft of tile including grout the next day. A 1,500 sq ft house in LVP is typically 3 working days plus a day for removal and prep; the same house in tile is closer to two weeks. The schedule calculator adds the cure and dry waits that cannot be skipped.
