Vinyl and resilient flooring calculators
LVP, LVT, sheet vinyl, cork, rubber, garage tiles and play mats, in boxes, rolls and packs.
Resilient flooring comes in more formats than any other kind: planks and tiles in boxes, sheet goods on 6, 12 and 13.2 foot rolls, rubber in rolls, tiles and heavy mats, and interlocking pieces that snap together over a garage slab or a playroom floor. The arithmetic for each is simple, but the unit you buy in is different every time, so the calculators here each speak the language of their own product: boxes and planks for LVP, linear feet and seams for sheet vinyl, pieces and edge strips for interlocking tiles.
Two things catch people out. Box coverage for plank varies more than for any other flooring, from under 18 to over 30 square feet, so the default here is only a starting point and the label is the figure that matters. And sheet goods are not bought by area at all but by the length cut from a roll of fixed width, so a room one inch wider than the roll can need twice as much material. The sheet vinyl calculator plans the seams for exactly that reason.

Garage tiles, gym rubber and play mats: counting the floor
Garage, gym and playroom floors are sold as tiles, rolls or mats rather than boxes of flooring, and each format wastes differently. Here is how to count each one, and what each weighs.
How much flooring do I need? The complete method
Measure the room in rectangles, add the waste your layout demands, divide by what the box really covers, round up once, and count the trim. Here is each step, with a living room worked from start to finish.
Buying luxury vinyl plank: boxes, wear layer, pad and price
Vinyl plank is the easiest floor to buy wrong, because boxes, thicknesses and wear layers vary so much. Here is what to read on the label and how to turn a room into boxes.
Which way to run planks, and how to avoid a thin last row
Plank direction is a choice about light, joists and the longest view. The last row is arithmetic, and it is the one you should do before laying the first plank.
Sheet vinyl: roll widths, seams, pattern match and how much to buy
Sheet vinyl comes in rolls 6, 12 or 13.2 ft wide, and you buy a length. A room that fits the roll needs no seam and wastes little; a room just over it can waste 40%.
Questions people ask
- How many boxes of LVP for 500 square feet?
- At 23.6 sq ft per box with a 10% allowance, 500 sq ft needs 550 sq ft of plank, which is 23.3 boxes, so you buy 24. If the box on your label covers 18.9 sq ft the same room needs 30 boxes, which is why the calculator makes you type the coverage from the carton rather than assuming it.
- Will sheet vinyl need a seam in my room?
- Only if the room is wider than the roll in both directions. A 12 ft roll covers any room up to 12 ft wide seamlessly, however long; a 13 × 15 ft room needs a seam whichever way the roll runs. The sheet vinyl calculator tries both directions, counts the seams and shows the length to buy for each.
- What waste factor should I use for vinyl plank?
- Use 10% for a straight layout in a simple room, 15% for a diagonal or a room with many obstacles, and 20% for herringbone. Pattern-matched planks that repeat a few printed faces can need an extra 5% so that identical faces are not laid side by side.
- How many rubber rolls for a home gym?
- Rubber rolls are 4 ft wide and sold by the linear foot or in fixed lengths of 25 or 50 ft. A 12 × 16 ft gym is three strips of 16 ft, so 48 linear feet, which is one 50 ft roll; the same room in 24 inch tiles needs 48 tiles plus about 5% for edge cuts. At 8 mm thick the room weighs around 350 lb of rubber, so plan the delivery.
- How many interlocking tiles for a two-car garage?
- A typical 20 × 20 ft two-car garage is 400 sq ft; in 12 inch tiles that is 400 tiles, and with 5% for the trimming along the walls you order 420. Add edge ramps along the door opening (about 20 pieces for a 20 ft door) and four corners. The garage tile calculator has presets for one-, two- and three-car garages.
